Thought for the day
As Christians, the distinction between being a “peacemaker” and a “peacekeeper” is important because of the deeper, proactive role that peacemaking calls us to fulfill in light of the Word of God.
1. Biblical Mandate:
In Matthew 5:9, Jesus says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Peacemaking is an active pursuit of reconciliation, justice, and peace, reflecting God’s heart for healing broken relationships and bringing people into harmony with Him and each other. A peacemaker actively works to restore peace, whether between individuals, groups, or nations, while a peacekeeper often seeks to maintain the status quo without addressing the underlying issues.
2. Proactive versus Passive:
Peacekeepers tend to focus on managing conflict or preventing things from escalating, which may sometimes mean compromising or avoiding difficult conversations. Peacemakers, however, are called to engage with conflict in a way that brings lasting healing. They aren’t just trying to preserve a temporary calm, but are striving to resolve the root causes of discord, offering forgiveness, reconciliation, and justice.
3. Reflecting Christ’s Mission:
Jesus Himself is the ultimate peacemaker. He didn’t just keep the peace by avoiding confrontation or uncomfortable truths; He brought peace by addressing sin, offering salvation, and calling people to repentance and reconciliation with God and one another. In Ephesians 2:14, Paul writes, “For he himself is our peace,” showing that peace through Christ isn’t just the absence of conflict, but the restoration of right relationship with God and others.
4. Kingdom of God:
As followers of Christ, we are ambassadors of His Kingdom, which is characterized by justice, mercy, and reconciliation. Peacemaking aligns with the values of God’s Kingdom, actively working to dismantle division and extend God’s peace in a broken world.
In summary, we are called to be peacemakers because it reflects the heart of Christ and His mission on earth, restoring peace in broken relationships through active reconciliation and justice. It’s more than just keeping the peace; it’s about transforming situations and people for lasting peace.
