Thought for the day
We are called to live in a way that reflects the character of Christ and that includes avoiding strife. Here are some reasons why we should seek to avoid strife:
1. Strife Opposes Christ’s Character
Jesus calls us to be peacemakers, reflecting His peace.
“Blessed are the peacemakers…” (Matthew 5:9)
2. Strife Comes from the Flesh
It’s a work of the sinful nature, not of the Holy Spirit.
“Hatred, contentions… are works of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:19–20)
“Where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.” (James 3:16)
3. Strife Divides the Body
It destroys unity in families, friendships, and the Church.
“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit…” (Ephesians 4:3)
“Live at peace with everyone.” (Romans 12:18)
4. Strife Blocks Spiritual Growth
Unresolved conflict hinders prayer and opens the door to the enemy.
“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.” (Psalm 66:18)
“Do not let the sun go down on your anger…” (Ephesians 4:26–27)
5. We Are Called to Love
Love chooses peace, forgives, and avoids unnecessary quarrels.
“Love is patient… not easily angered.” (1 Corinthians 13:4–5)
“Love covers over a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8)
Avoiding strife isn’t about being passive or avoiding hard truths, it’s about choosing humility, patience, and peace over pride and conflict. As Christians, we are ambassadors of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18–20), and we reflect Christ best when we pursue peace.
