Thought for the day
Psalms 12:1-8 (3) NIV– May the LORD silence all flattering lips and every boastful tongue
Whoever flatters does not have people’s interest at heart because insincere praise is like digging a pit for others to fall. But, the one who will correct with the truth when required, is demonstrating love and will be valued because the truth is always beneficial (Proverbs 28:23).
Therefore, it’s important to note the risks involved when we sweet-talk or get flattered:
1. Flattery is a sin. (Jude 1:16; Romans 16:18)
2. A flatterer has hidden motives to deceive people while he sets a trap. (Proverbs 16:2; 29:5)
3. Flattery is a tool for seduction. Our youths need be made aware of this. Anyone who overpraises someone because they wants to marry that person does not really love them. (Proverbs 7:21-23)
4. The purpose of flattery can be to disgrace and destroy. For example, David’s enemies engaged in flattery to crush him (Psalms 5:8-9).
We need the Holy Spirit to be able to discern (1 John 4:1) and run from the lips that over-hype.(Proverbs 26:28). Flattery is neither a form of communication or encouragement; instead, it is manipulation. It is important to understand that manipulation is paramount to witchcraft. God is never at peace with this deceitful act. Therefore, as we can see from today’s scripture , He will silence every mouth that flatters (Psalms 12:3). If need be, repent.
