Thought for the day
Self-centeredness is not just a sin, it’s a root cause of other sins such as envy, jealousy, impatience, and ingratitude. Self-centeredness is the polar opposite of the fruit of the spirit as described in Galatians 5:22-23: “… love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…”
One way to know when we are being self-centered is when we refuse to trust God more than ourself. Scripture makes it clear that God doesn’t want us to lean on our own understanding or our own perspectives.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5 NIV)
He wants us to trust Him and realize that we can’t figure out everything on our own.
Here are five telltale signs that we have slipped into self-centeredness:
1. We get worried and upset over small things.
2. We are too busy to pursue a deeper and more meaningful relationship with our Heavenly Father.
3. We become easily bitter in relationships.
4. We trust ourselves more than we trust God
5. We lack compassion.
We need to take the above points and prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to us if we have slipped or are slipping into self- centeredness. We need to be Christ centered which makes us others centered and not self-centered.
