Thought for the day

Lying is an abomination to God because it goes against the core values of truth, integrity, and trust that are central to God’s nature and His teachings. Here are a few key reasons why lying is so serious:
1. God is Truth:
In the Word of God, God is described as the ultimate source of truth. In John 14:6, Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Since God embodies truth, lying directly contradicts His nature. Lying can damage the relationship between humans and God, as it violates His moral standard.
2. Commandment Against Lying:
The Bible explicitly forbids lying in several places. For example, in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:16), God commands, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” This is a clear directive that integrity in speech is a matter of obedience to God’s law.
3. Lying Hurts Relationships:
Lying undermines trust, which is foundational to relationships, whether with God, others, or oneself. We are called to love one another (Matthew 22:39), and lying destroys that love by creating division, suspicion, and harm.
4. Satan is the Father of Lies:
In John 8:44, Jesus says that the devil is “the father of lies.” Lying is associated with evil and deception, which is why it is seen as a tactic of the enemy to lead people away from the truth and God’s righteousness.
5. Christian Witness:
We are called to be examples of truthfulness, as our actions and words reflect on God’s character. Lying damages our witness to the world and can prevent others from coming to know the truth of God’s love and salvation.

In essence, lying is not just a minor transgression for us as Christians, it is seen as a serious offense because it disrupts the harmony between God’s truth, the individual, and others. Our Christian life should emphasize honesty and integrity, thereby reflecting God’s nature and the call to love and trust one another.
