Thought for the day
For us as Christians, the importance of our “yes” being our “yes” and our “no” being our “no” stems from the teachings of Jesus and the values of honesty, integrity, and commitment in our faith.
In Matthew 5:37, Jesus says, “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.”
This verse highlights a few important reasons why this is essential for us:
1. Integrity and Trustworthiness:
When we say “yes,” it should reflect our true intention and commitment, and when we say “no,” it should be a firm boundary. Our words should align with our actions, building trust with others and reflecting God’s own faithfulness to His promises. Being truthful with our words shows that we are people who can be trusted and that we honour our commitments.
2. Avoiding Manipulation:
By making our “yes” and “no” clear and firm, we avoid the temptation to manipulate situations or people. Sometimes, in situations where we don’t want to disappoint or upset someone, we might give ambiguous answers, but Jesus calls us to be clear and honest. This helps maintain our purity of heart and prevents us from engaging in deceitful behaviour.
3. Living with Clarity:
A clear “yes” or “no” reflects a life of conviction and purpose. As Christians, we are called to live with purpose, making decisions that honour God. When we waver or make promises we can’t keep, it can create confusion and undermine our ability to live in alignment with our faith.
4. Following Christ’s Example:
Jesus Himself lived with perfect integrity. He didn’t offer empty promises or say things He didn’t mean. His words were trustworthy. We are called to follow His example in all areas of life, including the words we speak and the promises we make.
Ultimately, when our “yes” means yes and our “no” means no, we demonstrate our commitment to living authentically, honouring God in the way we interact with others, and avoiding the deceit that can distort our witness to the world.
