For us as Christians, displaying godly character is important for several reasons:

1. Reflecting God’s Image:
As Christians we believe that humans are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). By displaying godly character, we are reflecting God’s nature and qualities, such as love, kindness, patience, humility, and justice. When we display these traits, we show the world what God is like.
2. Living Out Our Faith:
James 2:17 teaches that faith without works is dead. Our actions, attitudes, and behaviours should align with our faith in God. Displaying godly character demonstrates that our faith is genuine and living. It’s a way to embody the teachings of Christ and make them visible to others.
3. Witnessing to Others:
The way we live and conduct ourselves serves as a witness to the world. Jesus said in Matthew 5:14-16 that as believers we are the light of the world and should let our light shine before others so they can see good works and glorify God. Our godly character can attract others to the faith and offer a testimony of God’s transformative power.
4. Living in Obedience to God:
God commands us to live righteous lives. In 1 Peter 1:15-16, we are called to be holy as God is holy. By displaying godly character, we show obedience to God’s commands and honour His authority in our lives.
5. Growing in Christlikeness:
We are called to be more like Jesus, and displaying godly character is part of the process of sanctification which is the ongoing transformation into Christ’s image (Romans 8:29, 2 Corinthians 3:18). By cultivating virtues like love, joy, peace, and self-control, we grow in our relationship with God and mature as Christians.
6. Bringing Glory to God:
Ultimately, godly character is about bringing glory to God. In everything we do, whether in word or deed, we are called to do it all for God’s glory (1 Corinthians 10:31). By displaying godly character, we honour God and make Him known to the world.

In summary, godly character is essential because it reflects who God is, strengthens our faith, serves as a witness to others, demonstrates our obedience, and brings glory to God.
