Thought for the day

Here are some reasons why we as Christians should not be disrespectful to one another:
1. We Are Called to Love One Another
Jesus commands His followers to love each other as He has loved us (John 13:34-35). This love is not just an emotion, but an active choice to honour, care for, and serve others. Disrespect, in contrast, undermines this command and creates division instead of unity.
2. We Are All Made in God’s Image
Every human being is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27), and therefore, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. To be disrespectful is to dishonour the very image of God in someone else.
3. The Body of Christ: Unity Over Division
As believers, we are part of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). Disrespecting one another fractures that unity and creates division, which is harmful to the health of the church. Each member of the body plays an essential role, and we are called to value and encourage one another, not tear each other down.
4. Christ’s Example
Jesus Himself showed us how to live with humility and respect for others. Even though He was the Son of God, He humbled Himself to serve others, washing His disciples’ feet (John 13:1-17). He didn’t treat people as inferior but reached out with compassion, grace, and patience.
5. Words Have Power
The Bible teaches that our words can build up or tear down (Ephesians 4:29; Proverbs 18:21). Disrespectful words can damage relationships, create misunderstandings, and harm someone’s spirit. Instead, we are encouraged to speak words that are helpful, kind, and encouraging.
6. Forgiveness and Grace
Christ has forgiven us much (Ephesians 4:32). The forgiveness and grace we have received should be reflected in how we treat others. Being disrespectful often stems from a lack of forgiveness, pride, or selfishness, which runs counter to the grace-filled nature of Christianity.
7. Setting an Example to the World
Our conduct toward one another serves as a witness to the world of who Christ is and what He has done. When Christians show respect and love for one another, it becomes a testimony of God’s love, drawing others to the faith (John 17:20-21).
8. The Command to Honour One Another
The Bible gives many specific commands to honour others. Romans 12:10 says, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves.” Respecting others is a concrete expression of honouring them above our own preferences or desires.
9. The Fruit of the Spirit
The Holy Spirit produces in us as believers the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), which includes love, kindness, patience, and gentleness. Disrespect is contrary to the work of the Spirit in our lives, while showing kindness and respect reflects His transformative work in us.
