Thought for the day
As Christians, we should not be competing with each other but rather completing each other. This stems from the biblical understanding of the body of Christ, which emphasizes unity, cooperation, and mutual edification.
Here are a few reasons why this is so important:
1. We are One Body in Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:12-27)
If members of the body are competing with each other rather than complementing each other’s strengths, the body cannot function effectively. The goal is for each member to work together for the health and growth of the whole body, rather than for personal achievement or glory.
2. Unity Reflects God’s Glory. ( John 17:20-23 )
Jesus prayed for the unity of His followers in, asking that we would be one, just as He and the Father are one. Unity among us as Christians is a powerful witness to the world of God’s love and the truth of the gospel.
3. Humility and Servant Leadership. (Matthew 20:25-28)
The call for us as Christians is not to outdo one another, but to humble ourselves, consider others better than ourselves (Philippians 2:3), and serve one another in love. When we work together rather than compete, we demonstrate Christlike humility and the heart of a servant.
4. Edifying One Another. (Ephesians 4:11-16)
Each person’s unique gifts and abilities are meant to complement others, rather than compete with them. By building each other up, encouraging one another, and using our gifts for the common good, we help the Church grow in maturity and faith.
5. Love Over Rivalry. (1 Corinthians 13)
Love is patient, kind, not jealous, and not boastful. Rivalry and competition can breed jealousy, pride, and division, while love fosters harmony, mutual respect, and cooperation. When we choose to complete each other, we are choosing to love one another as Christ has loved us (John 13:34-35).
6. A Witness to the World.
The world often promotes a mindset of competition, whether in the workplace, in social settings, or even within religious communities. But we as the Church is called to stand out as a model of cooperation, love, and mutual support. When Christians live in unity and work together, it serves as a powerful witness to the world that God’s Kingdom is different from the world’s systems.
The call for us as Christians is to not compete with each other but to complete each other is rooted in the idea that we are all part of the same body of Christ. When we work together in love and humility, we reflect God’s character, fulfill our individual purposes, and build each other up in the faith. This not only glorifies God but also serves as a powerful testimony of His love to a watching world.
