Thought for the day
Entitlement can be harmful to us as Christians for several key reasons:
1. It breeds pride and selfishness
Entitlement focuses on what we think we deserve, rather than cultivating humility and gratitude, which are core Christian virtues (Philippians 2:3-4).
2. It undermines grace
Christianity is built on the unearned gift of God’s grace. Entitlement shifts our mindset from grace to merit, making us forget that everything we have is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9).
3. It hinders servant-hearted living
Jesus calls us to serve others, not to demand our rights or privileges (Mark 10:45). Entitlement leads us to expect to be served rather than to serve.
4. It fosters discontentment
When we feel entitled, we are more likely to complain and feel dissatisfied when things don’t go our way, instead of trusting God’s will and timing (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
5. It weakens our witness
A sense of entitlement can make Christians appear arrogant or ungrateful to others, harming our ability to reflect Christ’s love and humility.
In short, entitlement turns our focus inward, while the gospel calls us to look outward—to God and to others.
