Thought for the day
As a Christian the concept of submission can be viewed through several important lenses being spiritual, relational, and practical:
1. Spiritual Submission:
At its core, Christian submission is about yielding to God’s will. This involves recognizing God’s authority and trusting in His plan. In the Bible, passages like James 4:7 “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you”, emphasize that submission to God is an act of faith and surrender, acknowledging that His wisdom and guidance are supreme.
2. Relational Submission:
In the context of relationships, submission often appears in teachings about family and community. For instance, Ephesians 5:21-22 discusses mutual submission among believers and specifically talks about wives submitting to their husbands as to the Lord. However, it’s important to understand this within the framework of mutual respect and love. The passage emphasizes that the husband’s role is to love his wife sacrificially, as Christ loved the Church (Ephesians 5:25). This mutual submission is meant to foster harmony and support in relationships.
3. Practical Submission:
Practically, submission involves respecting authority and contributing to a well-ordered society. Romans 13:1-2 advises believers to submit to governing authorities, as they are established by God. This submission is not about blind obedience but about recognizing that leadership and order are part of God’s design for human society.
In all these aspects, Christian submission is not about subjugation or passivity but about willingly aligning oneself with a higher purpose and recognizing the roles and responsibilities given by God. It’s about serving others with humility and love, reflecting Christ’s example of service and sacrifice.
