Thought for the day
Exercising authority as Christians is an integral part of living out our faith. Here are some reasons why we should want to exercise authority, whether in our personal life, within the church, or in broader society:
1. Faithful Stewardship:
We are stewards of God’s creation and must act responsibly in our roles of authority. This stewardship involves managing resources, guiding others, and making decisions that align with God’s will. Exercising authority wisely reflects a commitment to fulfilling our responsibilities in a manner consistent with Christian values.
2. Following Christ’s Example:
Jesus is considered the ultimate model of leadership and authority in Christianity. His life and teachings demonstrate how to exercise authority with humility, service, and love. We are encouraged to emulate Christ’s example by leading in ways that reflect His character and teachings.
3. Promoting Justice and Righteousness:
Exercising authority can be a means of promoting justice and righteousness in the world. We are called to work towards justice, protect the vulnerable, and uphold moral standards. Authority can be used to advocate for social justice, support ethical practices, and address injustices.
4. Building Up the Community:
Within the church, authority is often exercised to build up the body of Christ, providing spiritual guidance, teaching, and pastoral care. This can help nurture faith, resolve conflicts, and foster a supportive and loving community.
5. Moral and Ethical Guidance:
We should exercise authority to provide moral and ethical guidance, whether in personal relationships or in positions of leadership. This guidance is intended to help others align their actions with Christian principles and values.
6. Protecting the Faithful:
Exercising authority can be a way to protect the well-being of others. In church leadership, this might mean guarding against false teachings, ensuring the welfare of the congregation, and maintaining the integrity of the faith.
7. Fulfilling the Great Commission:
In the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20), Jesus instructs his followers to make disciples of all nations. Exercising authority can be part of this mission, leading and guiding others in the faith and helping them grow spiritually.
8. Promoting Unity:
Authority can be used to foster unity within the Christian community. By providing clear direction, resolving disputes, and encouraging collaboration, those in authority can help maintain a cohesive and supportive church environment.
9. Personal Growth:
Exercising authority responsibly can also contribute to personal growth and maturity. It challenges us to develop virtues like patience, wisdom, and humility, and to align our actions with our faith.
In all these areas, the exercise of authority should be characterized by Christian virtues such as love, humility, and servant leadership. It is not about exerting power for its own sake but about guiding, supporting, and leading in ways that reflect Christ’s example and advance the values of the Christian faith.
