Thought for the day
As followers of Christ, we are called to be humble, teachable, and obedient to God’s Word. Stubbornness, while often seen as strength in the world, is actually a spiritual danger when it hardens our hearts against God’s correction and guidance. The Bible consistently warns us about the consequences of a stubborn spirit and urges us to choose humility instead.
Here are 5 brief reasons with scripture on why Christians should not be stubborn:
1. Stubbornness leads to destruction
Proverbs 29:1 – “Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.”
Refusing correction brings serious consequences.
2. God rejects the stubborn-hearted
Psalm 81:11-12 – “But my people would not listen to me… So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.”
Stubbornness can cause God to withdraw His guidance.
3. Stubbornness is like idolatry
1 Samuel 15:23 – “For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.”
Stubbornness is a form of rebellion against God.
4. Christ calls us to humility and teachability
Philippians 2:3-5 – “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves… have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.”
A stubborn spirit opposes the humble mindset of Christ.
5. Being teachable brings wisdom
Proverbs 12:1 – “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.”
A wise Christian welcomes correction, not stubborn resistance.
Stubbornness may feel like standing your ground, but in the spiritual life, it often means resisting God. As Christians, we are called to soft hearts, open ears, and willing spirits. Let us surrender our pride and allow God to mold us into Christ’s image—humble, obedient, and teachable.
