Thought for the day
It’s important as Christians not to argue with one another for the following reasons:
1. Promotes Unity in the Body of Christ:
We are called to be one body in Christ, with each member contributing to the whole (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). Arguing and creating division within the Christian community can weaken the bond of unity that Christ desires for His followers (John 17:21).
2. Reflects Christ’s Love:
Jesus commanded His followers to love one another (John 13:34-35). Arguing and engaging in conflict often result in hurt, division, and broken relationships. Instead, we are encouraged to seek reconciliation, peace, and understanding, following Christ’s example of gentleness and humility (Ephesians 4:2-3, Philippians 2:3-4).
3. Fosters Peace and Harmony:
The Bible calls us as believers to live at peace with one another (Romans 12:18). Arguments often breed hostility, while peaceful relationships are a testimony to the world of the transforming power of the Gospel. We are encouraged to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and to pursue peace, even when they disagree.
4. Avoids Sowing Discord:
Proverbs 6:16-19 lists things that God hates, and one of them is “a person who stirs up conflict in the community.” Arguing in a way that causes division is not only unloving, but it also goes against God’s desire for harmony in the Church.
5. Demonstrates Wisdom and Maturity:
James 1:19-20 encourages us as believers to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Arguing often reflects a lack of self-control and can escalate conflicts unnecessarily. We are called to display the wisdom from above, which is pure, peace-loving, considerate, and full of mercy (James 3:17).
6. Witness to the World:
When we argue in a way that dishonours God, it can negatively affect our witness to the world. However, when Christians show love, patience, and humility in the face of disagreements, it reflects the character of Christ and draws others to Him (Matthew 5:16, 1 Peter 3:15).
In essence, while disagreement is inevitable in any community, as Christians, we’re called to handle it in a way that builds each other up, reflects God’s love, and promotes peace rather than division.
